AI text generators have been making headlines since ChatGPT launched last year. And if you know how to prompt an appropriately-trained tool, an AI text generator can already help you work better and faster.
While GPT is still the biggest name in AI, there are now a wide range of other large language models (LLM) that offer similar features to developers. There are models that developers can train and deploy themselves, like Meta's Llama, and other APIs, like Claude and Google Gemini. This all means that developers now have a range of options for adding AI text generation to their apps—which is why there are so many tools with similar features available.
Of course, every app having a similar core feature-set means that they all make a lot of marketing noise about how they're different. Over the past 18 months, AI text generation has gone from futuristic to widely available. This means that most of these apps now position themselves as some kind of fully-featured marketing tool.
That's not to say that the marketing features—like keyword comparisons, market research, AI image generation, and integrations with other marketing services—don't have a use, but all these tools fundamentally are built around having an AI model generate text for you.
The top AI text generators
How do AI text generators work?
Most text generation apps rely on LLMs that use the transformer architecture. Although it was developed by a group of Google researchers, GPT is the most well known example, so we'll focus on how it works, so you have a rough idea of what's going on under the hood with these large language models. All the other models work pretty similarly, and if you want to dive into the nitty-gritty, you can normally find some research papers or technical descriptions that break down what makes each model special.
GPT works by taking a text prompt and then predicting what words will best follow on from your request, based on the data it was trained on. That training data includes books, articles, and other documents across all different topics, styles, and genres—and an unbelievable amount of content scraped from the open internet. Basically, GPT has crunched through the sum total of human knowledge and built a deep learning neural network—a complex, many-layered, weighted algorithm modeled after the human brain. It's wild how much work has gone into it—and how little we understand about how these algorithms really work.
What most of these AI text generator apps do, then, is add a user interface on top of GPT that allows you to control its output. It's nothing you can't do in ChatGPT, but it's presented in a way that makes sure you don't forget any important details, helping you get the best output possible. For example:
In ChatGPT, if you wanted to write a 150-word email in a friendly tone to a customer about your new product feature, you'd need to type that all right into ChatGPT. For example, you'd type: "Write a 150-word email in a friendly tone to a customer about the new matching human/dog outfits offered by Winston.ly."
In an AI text generator, you'd get prompted for all that information. It would have you indicate the content type, let you select the length, choose a tone from a dropdown menu, and so on. Most AI text generators also offer a text editor, where you can edit the AI-generated text directly from the app.
That's just scratching the surface, but it gives you an idea of what we're looking at here.
You can dive deeper into the specifics of how this works by reading more about natural language processing and how ChatGPT works. But for now, all you really need to understand is that these tools are impressive—even if they frequently make things up.
33 AI text generators you can try right now
This isn't a list of the best AI text generators—that's over with my picks for the best AI writing generators. Instead, this list shows off almost three dozen major, good, and reputable AI text generation tools that you can play around with.
A few things you won't find on this list:
I haven't included every tool that can generate AI text because, to be honest, these features are being added absolutely everywhere. They might be integrated into an app you already use, so check your existing apps first.
There are niche apps like Sapling, which is aimed at sales and support teams, but I kept this list to more broad-reaching AI text generators that don't sit on top of an existing app or focus only on specific roles.
I didn't include ChatGPT, Bing, Gemini, or other AI chatbots on this list for the reasons mentioned above. They can generate AI text, but they're not a structured AI text generator the way the other apps are.
As you read through the options, you'll notice that they all sound really similar. That's because…they are. I'm guessing there will be bigger differentiators as the technology develops, but for now, they're all doing more or less the same thing—just with slightly different angles.

While ChatGPT, Bing, and Google Gemini are a great way to play around with AI text generators, if you want to generate high-quality copy, outlines for blog posts, and other more specific kinds of text, one of the apps above will give you a better workflow. But because almost all of them rely on GPT, you're unlikely to see major differences in the actual output. It's the overall user experience, additional features, and pricing that sets them apart.
Scroll through the list, find an AI text generator you like the sound of, and give it a go. Or head over to my picks for the best AI writing generators to narrow it down even more.
