What is LinkedIn?

LinkedIn is the world's largest professional network with 756 million members in more than 200 countries and territories worldwide.. People use it to network with people in their industry, find a job, attend virtual professional events, and promote their work.

On LinkedIn, you can make a profile to represent your career journey, including a timeline of your roles and responsibilities, highlighting special projects and accolades, and recommendations from people in your network. This allows people to connect with you based on your industry, former and current workplaces, and interests.

You can also make LinkedIn Pages for your company, where you can drive brand awareness & quality engagement with professional audiences as well as highlight your products and services, and post job openings. LinkedIn Pages also help you host virtual events, poll your followers, and engage with your wider audience.

Who's on LinkedIn?

756 million members—including executives from every Fortune 500 company—and 57 million companies are on LinkedIn. That's a pretty big chunk of the world's population. (Definitely more than you'd meet in person, even if you went to a networking event each day for the rest of your life!)

LinkedIn's user audience is sizable and full of surprises:

  • When you think of younger people on social networking sites, maybe TikTok or Snapchat comes to mind—but young professionals and decision-makers are also on LinkedIn. Of U.S. adults between the ages of 18 and 29, 32% use LinkedIn.
  • College graduates tend to join LinkedIn more than other groups—51% of U.S. adults with college degrees are members of the platform.
  • LinkedIn users tend to have power within their organizations: Four out of five LinkedIn users drive business decisions.

If your business isn't using LinkedIn for marketing, you're missing out on a chance to connect. Adding a new social channel doesn't have to mean a ton of extra effort, either.

"Chances are, your company is already creating a ton of valuable content in the daily course of business, whether that’s a company blog, informational brochures or training, your presence at events, and more," says Kylee Lessard, product marketer for LinkedIn Pages. "Much of this content can easily be translated to a social media post in the form of a quick takeaway or 'tip of the day.' As long as the content will help inform, educate or inspire your target audience, it belongs on LinkedIn!"

Why should you be on LinkedIn?

More so than any other social media platform, people are ready to make a purchase decision on LinkedIn, according to a HubSpot study.

HubSpot found that LinkedIn generated the highest visitor-to-lead conversion rate at 2.74%. That conversion rate came in almost three times higher than both Twitter (0.69%) and Facebook (0.77%). When people log in to LinkedIn, they're more ready to hear from companies—and they trust what they read. According to eMarketer, LinkedIn was ranked the most-trusted social networking website four years in a row.

That's an especially exciting stat for anyone selling business solutions like software. Every new lead counts, and LinkedIn helps you reach the right ones at the right time.

What can you do on LinkedIn?

LinkedIn profile, groups, and business pages help you promote yourself and your business while connecting with like-minded professionals.

On top of these free tools, LinkedIn's Marketing Solutions has some advertising options that help you get your message out even further:

  • Matched Audiences are custom audience segments you can use to target specific lists of audiences in your advertising campaigns, such as people who have visited your website or people who share characteristics with your current audience.
  • Lead Gen Forms help you capture information about people interested in your products and services more quickly than typical website forms, since LinkedIn can fill in their information for them.
  • Jobs on LinkedIn make hiring easier by providing more up front information about qualified candidates. Instead of just a resume, view their full profile for a better idea of fit.

These tools all become a lot more powerful when you pair them with automated workflows using Zapier.

What is Zapier?

Zapier is an automation tool that helps you establish connections between apps. These connections are called Zaps, and they automatically perform tasks you'd otherwise have to do manually.

You could create Zaps to do any number of automated tasks with your LinkedIn marketing. For example, you could automatically load leads from a LinkedIn ad into your customer relationship management (CRM) software, or send a thank-you email any time a user fills out a LinkedIn Lead Gen Form.
