New for Asana: A Timeline Feature with Gantt Charts

Project management tool Asana just got a handy new feature for Premium members: Gantt charts. The Gantt chart view, which Asana calls Timeline, is a visual and interactive representation of a project and the steps needed to complete it, including details about each step, such as who is responsible for completing it and any task dependencies. With this view, everyone can see at a glance how a project is progressing and what's up next.

The new Timeline views are generated automatically based on details in Asana, so the diagram is always in sync with whatever changes you make to the project and its associated tasks.

How to Get Asana Timeline

Asana's Timeline feature is rolling out to Premium subscribers today.

To see a Gantt chart of an existing project in Asana, look for the new Timeline tab to appear in the app. Clicking on it should bring up a visual representation of your project's schedule, as long as the project has sufficient data, such as start dates and due dates for tasks.

From the Timeline view, you can drag and drop tasks to change their dates. As you make changes, any conflicts you create among dependent tasks appear in the Gantt chart, allowing you to spot them in advance.

You'll also see a section for unscheduled tasks, so you can pull them into the Timeline by setting new date ranges for those tasks.

Asana hits a sweet spot of being an inexpensive project management app that's extremely flexible—teams can use it to manage work in whatever way they choose. With the addition of Gantt charts, Asana users now have more options for how to use the app, similar to when the company added kanban Boards in 2016.

While Asana's free limited tier of service is one of the best free project management apps for managing small projects among small teams, the addition to Gantt charts may make it more competitive among in the paid space for larger teams and projects as well.
